Treatment of symptoms, versus prevention of symptoms
- both are therapeutic
- artificial distinction – chronic continuum
- along the continuum looking for disease modifying agents to intervene at stages
- “treatment” is slowing existing symptoms, palliative/cognitive enhancers
- “prevention” is delaying the onset of symptoms
slowing the existing symptoms, mitigating the disease
treating the disease before symptoms are present, delaying the onset of symptoms, objective: delay or prevent appearance of symptoms, learning about the pathophysiology: measure biomarker changes, can we develop a signature of the disease? how can we tell if treatment is effective?
